Yin yoga is a yoga form in which a practitioner holds the yoga postures for an extended time, typically three to five minutes. The practice of Yin Yoga poses is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This yoga form releases tension as well as tightness in the body's connective tissues, such as ligaments, fascia and tendons.

Other yoga styles mainly strengthen and stretch muscles, but yin yoga targets deep connective tissues of the body due to which it helps to maintain joint flexibility and mobility. Practitioners of this Yoga style hold their Yin yoga postures with the use props such as blankets, blocks or bolsters for support.

History of Yin Yoga

The concept of Yin yoga is based on the principles of Taoist tradition of ancient China. In the Taoist tradition, there is the concept of Yin and Yang in which, Yin symbolises the passive, dark, still, cool as well as receptive aspects of nature like moon, night, femininity and the earth. The Yang conversely represents light, activity, heat as well as dynamism. It is linked to the sun, daytime, masculinity and the heavens.

Traditional yoga mainly works on dynamic movements as well as muscle engagement while Yin yoga follows a complementary approach by targeting the joints and deep connective tissues in the body
